I grew up on a farm at Hinton, Oklahoma. I received my bachelor’s
degree in education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. After working in the public school system for
three years, I realized that public education was not the forum for me.
My husband, is a pharmacist employed at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital.
My two greatest achievements in life are leading both our daughters to Christ Our daughters have attended classes at
PET, now EXCEL, since 1996, the inaugural year of PET classes. I have been on staff at EXCEL since January of 2007.
Reading has always been my passion. My goal is to instill in my students
a love for reading and the ability to comprehend what they read. Developing good vocabulary skills is necessary to understanding
the content of the materials they are studying, whether it is a biology book or a contract on a first home. Literature is
a vehicle to lead them to these skills. My classes are strong on preparation for the reading and language arts section of
the SAT and ACT.
I hope that you will enroll in the literature classes offered through Excel as enrichment to your students educational
experience. As you enroll, please do be aware that not all books that are studied
in literature classes each semester are written by Christian authors. Nevertheless,
these quality authors, such as Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and others, will be taught from a Christian worldview. There may be an occasional curse word, situation, or opinion expressed in these books that do not represent
a strictly Christian lifestyle and which are not considered acceptable by either Mrs. Erwin or the Christian/home school community
in general.
I appreciate the value of keeping our students away from contrary influences and so have done my best to minimize
these instances as much as possible without excluding all classic literature. As
our students grow, they will become more and more exposed to the world and these occasional instances presented in literature
class may present a learning/discussion opportunity for you and your student. I
would encourage you to read along with your student and discuss these scenarios as they arise.
I believe classic literature is very enriching to our student’s education and provides them with cultural literacy
that will be shared by their collegiate peers. If you have any questions or concerns,
please feel free to contact me so that we might discuss them together.
