Carla Brown
( Honors Biology, Honors Anatomy )
Years Experience: I taught public school in the Putnam City School District for 9 years at both the junior high and high school levels. (I
much prefer high school! J) This will be my ninth year to tutor through PET, and I
privately tutored two homeschool students for elementary- and jr. high-level sciences for four years.
Credentials: I went to OSU and earned a
bachelor’s in Secondary Education and then went on to UCO for a master’s in Counseling.
Family Information: I am the youngest of four children. I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home where Jesus and church were priorities! I am married to Terry (13 years this past July!), and we have three beautiful
children: Parker, 10, Tanner, 8 ˝, and Jordan, 6 ˝. Jesus and church are still priorities!
Educational Philosophy: I think what I would like to tell
you about my spin on education is my main goal: As ably as I can, I want to prepare young people for further education by
helping them learn to apply what they’ve learned in my class, while at the same time hopefully making life science fun! I do not think the ability to memorize facts is nearly as important as understanding
how those facts apply in a practical or real-life setting. I set the bar high,
and then I sit back and grin as students exceed their own expectations and excel in my classes. I also enjoy watching a great deal of hard work pay off for those who put in the effort!
Why I Continue to Teach: I love what I do! This fact became especially true teaching homeschooled students, more than it ever was in the public school
setting. I believe this is a direct result of the positive parental interaction
with students and with me. I enjoy interacting with and getting to know young
people and helping them learn to enjoy subjects that many do not. I get a tremendous
kick out of listening to students during labs as they discover something miraculously wonderful and then can hardly restrain
themselves from wanting to share their new “discovery” with their classmates and with me! These are just SOME of the reasons I continue to teach.
